You are probably here because you know you want a website, and you want to attract traffic to it.  You probably also want visitors to your website to stick around long enough to hear what you have to say.  I expect your ultimate goal would be for them to contact you, either to place an order, or enquire about a product or service you offer, depending on your business.

How do you get them to do that?

You can't force them.  Clearly several different factors play a role, such as the price of your product or service and whether it fits your visitors needs.  Get this wrong and your visitors will probably be on their way fairly swiftly.  What is important is to engage with your prospects as soon as they land on your website, and try and keep their attention by drawing them further in.  This doesn't necessarily mean jumping up and down screaming about your special offers.  Infact it can often mean using simple, uncomplicated language.  This is where good copywriting comes in.  Copywriting is the use of words to promote a person, business, opinion or idea and can be the most powerful tool in your armoury when trying to convert passing footfall to fully fledged customers. 

It is true that the initial impact of a website often relies on making a strong visual impression, but many people overlook the importance of what they say and how they say it when setting up a website.  The two need to work hand in hand.  The tone of voice you use and your choice of words are all building up a relationship of trust with your new website visitor, and if you keep on getting this right you could be one step closer to acquiring your next customer!  It's just like when you meet people face to face; you are forming opinions about them on many different levels; body language, how they are dressed, how they speak.  With a website you don't get to meet your customers face to face so it is important to convey the right impression first time.

Never more than now has the art of copywriting been so important.  Effective search engine optimisation relies heavily on the keywords you want to be famous for online not only being encoded into the html tags that sit behind your customer facing web pages but being strategically integrated into the content of your web pages.
